Looking for Alaska is a realistic fiction novel by John Green. It’s about a group of friends who go to a boarding school, called Culver Creek. The point of view of this story is by Miles Halter or “Pudge”. This book is organized from the number of days before and, about halfway through the book it switches to the number of day after. What it’s refereing to is very surprising, and when I read it, I didn’t expect it at all.
There are many other characters that are important to the story. His roommate and pretty much his best friend is, Chip Martin or “The Colonel”. The colonel introduces him to his closest friends Alaska Young and Takumi Hikohito. Another character, Lara is also introduced. Alaska and Pudge get very close which has a huge part in the climax and what the big “surprise” is. But all together the group group of friends have fun together throughout the story. They would be considered as trouble makers. Throughout the story you will read about pranks and different things they do. Overall the book is exciting, realistic, and interesting.
I would recommend this book to anyone who likes The Catcher in the Rye because it has sort of a similar “feel” to it. It’s not the same story and not anywhere close, but they sort of feel similar in a way. I know that reviews have said it has a similar essence to The Catcher in the Rye. If you haven’t read that book and you like novels about romance, humor, and adventure then you’ll probably like Looking for Alaska.
